Simply put, the rankings system accounts for your opposition, not which races you contest. A rider’s rankings are determined by averaging their best rankings in a given discipline within the last rolling 12 month period. For Criterium, Road Race, Time Trial, Cross Country and Cyclocross we average your top 5 best event rankings in that particular discipline to come up with your overall discipline ranking. For all other disciplines, we average just your top 3 rankings in that particular discipline. In the new rankings system, the lower your ranking point average, the better you’re ranked.
1. Points System: The ranking algorithm assigns points to riders based on their performance in races. The number of points awarded is influenced by factors such as the race category, field size, and the rider's finishing position. Generally, higher finishes in more competitive races yield more points. Points earned from multiple races are accumulated over a specific period to determine a rider's overall ranking.
2. Race Quality: The ranking algorithm takes into account the quality or difficulty level of the races in which a rider competes. Races that attract stronger competition or have a higher level of prestige may offer more points. This aspect encourages riders to participate in challenging events and compete against tough opponents.
3. Time Decay: Rankings in cycling incorporate a time decay factor, where older race results gradually lose their value over time. This allows recent performances to have a greater impact on a rider's ranking compared to results from several months or years ago. Only races from the a rolling past 12 months count towards your current ranking.
4. Category Specificity: The rankings are specific to each category and discipline of cycling. Riders earn points and rankings within their respective category and discipline (road racing, track racing, mountain biking, etc.). This ensures that riders are ranked relative to others in their skill level and chosen discipline.
